Resizing Photos
There are a number of ways to get your photos to fit on your Layout without
getting distortion of your image. I will be using Photoshop CS2 for the
purposes of this tutorial. However, the tools used in this tutorial are very
basic and you should be able to find them in your program of choice.
The first and most basic way to resize a photo in Photoshop is to use the
move tool .
As you can see in my example, my picture is very large compared to my
page. I want to reduce the size and fit it into the frame. You can also use
this technique to resize elements and keep their proportions as well, which is
what I am going to do here. I am going to make the frame slightly larger,
but keep its dimensions.
I hid my picture to make it easier to see what I am doing to the frame. I took
my little arrow and placed it on one of the corners of the frame.
Before you start dragging the corner out you want to click on the little chain
between the width and the height. This will lock the proportions of the
image you are resizing. Now all you need to do is pull out one of the
corners and your object will resize without distortion. You could also enter
a percentage in either the height or width, since it’s locked, it will
automatically fill in the other dimension.
Okay, so you can see that I enlarged the frame. Now I am going to enlarge
the photo using the same steps as above.
Okay, so now I have my photo at the size I would like, but it does extend
over the edge just a bit. I recommend using the rectangular marquee tool
I moved the photo under the frame, so I could see where the frame edges are.
Drag out you marquee tool until you get it where you would like it.
The fact that the photo is beneath the frame gives us a little more freedom in
what we actually select, we just want to make sure we don’t include any part
of the photo that extends beyond that of the from. Now, you want to invert
your selection, on the photo layer. You can do that by going to
Select>Inverse or simply by pressing Shift+Ctrl+I
You can now see the selection outline or “marching ants” now surround the
opposite of what you previously selected. Ensuring that you are on the
photo layer, hit the backspace key. This will delete the portion of the photo
you don’t want.
Now that little extra piece is gone and our picture fits perfectly inside of our
frame!!
Now, just deselect the layer and continue adding photos and elements as you
wish, .
